:) it’s a great subject

MASS SPECTROMETRY

  • Used to identify isotopes
  • ISOTOPES: atoms with same atomic numbers but a diff mass or same number of protons but diff number of neutrons

METHOD:

  • Sample is evaporated into a gas before entering the instrument
  • Enters IONIZATION CHAMBER where high energy electrons are bombarded to form ions which ionize the molecule to break into smaller fragments.
  • The uncharged particles are removed by a vacuum pump and the positive ions enter the ACCELERATION CHAMBER. This is where the +ve ions are accelerated to high speeds by an electric field
  • The ions then enter the DEFLECTION CHAMBER where the magnetic field in the chamber deflects the path of the particles according to their mass. Large mass = less deflection

INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY
  • Infrared radiation is not enough to move electrons to higher energy levels but is enough to cause changes in the bonds in molecules (e.g. stretching, contracting, bending identifies key components)
  • The molecule has different vibrational energy when this happens and IR spect used this to analyse the specific functional groups of the presence of double/ triple bonds present
  • Is a qualitative method which measures the amount of energy that the bonds between atoms transmit when exposed to radiation in the infra-red proportion of the electromagnetic spectrum

Chromatography
  • Technique used for identification of different components in a compound using the method of separation
  • Stationary phase is the column in which the components will travel through
  • Mobile phase is responsible for sweeping the components through the stationary phase
  • Rate of movement depends on how strongly it is attracted to the stationary phase and how readily it dissolves in the mobile phase
  • The stronger the attraction to the stationary phase, the slower the speed, the more soluble the component in the mobile phase, the faster the speed
  • In chromatography adsorption is the attraction of one substance to the surface of another and desorption is the bonds between a substance and the surface its adsorbed to breaking.
  • The degree of adsorption of a component depends on the functional groups it carried (level of polarity), the chemical structure of the stationary phase and the size of the molecules
  • MORE ADSORBED ONTO STATIONARY PHASE = SLOWER
  • LESS ADSORBED ONTO STATIONARY PHASE (MORE ATTRACTED TO MOBILE PHASE) =FASTER

Injustice is disgusting
  • okay massive rant ahead because i'm so mad
  • BACKSTORY:
  • - Lately, my little sister has been given some shit by her teacher Ms Mepsted.
  • - White blonde mid 30ish lady telling jenny that she can't get into the high school she wants because of her "attitude". Wtf killing children's dreams
  • - Tells my sister "i'm going to write on your report that you're rude and disrespectful"
  • - Ms Mepsted and another teacher fighting over whether > or < means 'greater than'. My sister says "i have pins and needles" and all of a sudden the bitch unleashes "IF YOURE SO SMART, WHY DONT YOU TELL US WHAT IT IS?"
  • - Mum goes to talk to the teacher and teacher keeps blaming my sister for her attitude. Doesn't fucking show concern to her improvement just keeps saying she needs to change she needs to change
  • -Jenny gets really upset, goes to a psychologist with my mum to talk about it.The psychologist says "teachers are not allowed to threaten students like that"
  • - Next day she comes home still sad so this morning my mum calls the school and requests to talk to the principal but apparently she's too busy to tend to the call.
  • - Jenny comes home crying and tells me that the principal told her that she needs to change her attitude within 2 weeks and to tell my mum everything is ok
  • ALRIGHT HERE IS THE RANT PART
  • So i'm at home with just my sister and she's crying so much that she's hyperventilating so i'm like OKAY ALRIGHT LETS CALL UP THE SCHOOL SORT SHIT OUT. The conversation went along these lines
  • Me: Hi, i'm jenny's sister can you tell me what happened today
  • Principal: well i asked jenny to come into my office for a talk
  • Me: oh how come you didnt call my mum back since she called and asked for you
  • Principal: well i think it's very important to hear the child's perspective as they are important blahblah (goes on about how much students views are)
  • Me: Ms Mepsted said some things that really upset her such as the thing about the report and i'm pretty sure teachers cant threaten students like that
  • Principal: Teachers CAN in fact WARN a student about their behaviour and as a teacher myself i know you can and i think you are being disrespectful for saying that
  • Me: ok soz for coming off that way but im just basing that on the psychologist jenny and my mum went to see who said that. But Ms Mepsted kept telling her she cant get into the school she wants. Isnt that disheartening the child?
  • Principal: No that's being realistic. We dont want to mislead the students by showing them that they can get into any school they want. Jenny only filled out one of the 2 preferences for her high school form
  • Me: Ah actually...
  • Principal: Now let me finish before you interrupt me because i know youre going to tell me about how your mum went to the open night but etcetc.
  • Me: um actually i wasnt going to say that, i just wanted to say that she did in fact put 2 preferences. I know because i was the one who helped her with filling it out
  • Principal: nonetheless she can't get into schools with that attitude
  • (uses the word attitude so loosely i dont even get it)
  • Me: so you're basing all your knowledge of this situation on what Ms Mepsted said?
  • Principal: yes because i've talked to her about it
  • Me: how do you know shes telling the absolute truth
  • Principal: trust me, she wouldn't lie to me i know she wouldnt
  • Me: likewise i know Jenny wouldnt lie to me
  • Principal: Let';s face it though, she's just a child and children can misinterpret the situation the wrong way
  • Me: didnt you say that child's perspective is important
  • Principal: yes but they can often take it out of context which is what she's gone and done
  • Me: Well i think that the facts can be coloured by the personalities of the people who present them (#twelveangrymenstats)
  • Principal: yes but she is making such a big deal out of something so small. Your mum is angry and she is upset for something so miniscule
  • Me: but if she's upset shouldnt you value...
  • Principal: yesyes i value this thats why i'm trying to work it out
  • Me: But why would you send the message through her? I think you should call my mum and tell her this yourself given that she called you earlier and you didnt reply
  • Principal: I dont need to know what you think (NOTE: SHE DEFINITELY SAID THIS PART) i'm working it out how i want to blahblahblah
  • Me: Wait did you say you dont need to know what i think
  • Principal: No, youre doing what jenny's doing and taking it out of the context and changing the meaning. What i mean is that i dont need someone to tell me how to do my job.
  • Me: but why send the message through her instead of just directly talking to my mum
  • Principal: Jenny is going into yr 7, she needs to develop skills to problem solve and i cant be the one solving this for her. if you mum has anymore questions she can call me tomorrow.
  • Me: k bye
  • So that was that and i'm so pissed because those arguments are filled with so many flaws that i was going to explode due to how inconsistent the things she said were. I just feel sorry for my sister coz she has to put up with these teachers every day. Far out

The last time i tried to bargain with a shop keeper, it failed horribly. And by that i mean i gave in to paying the full price. god, that was a hopeless attempt. My awesome amazing super duper mum is just the opposite, nooo idea how she does it but omg she is a bargaining genius. Saved me 60 bucks on my formal dress today :’) alterations included. I’m glad tomorrow’s mother’s day so i can give her a big thanks through the best way i know how. FOOOOOOOOOOOOD

you should treat everyone equally?

If you treat everybody the same then what’s the reward for being an exceptionally good friend. think about it.
